Bank Exchanges Monopoly Money for the Real Thing

January 26, 2009

A woman who successfully persuaded a bank’s currency office to exchange Monopoly money for the real thing has been arrested after she tried to do it again and the bank finally caught on.

The 61-year-old entered a Nordea bank in Denmark carrying a wad of Swedish Monopoly money. She persuaded an exchange officer to give her about $240 worth of Danish kroner in trade.

But by the time she returned the next day with more play money, bank officials had discovered the ruse and she was sent directly to jail without passing “Go.”

Branch manager Ulrik Feveile Nielsen blamed an inexperienced employee and commented, “As long as humans are involved, mistakes will happen.”
