Hiring Only Capricorns Isn’t Illegal Job Discrimination
February 12, 2009
A company that wants to hire only Capricorns – or people with other specific zodiac signs – is not illegally discriminating, at least under the law of Austria.
That’s because the law only bans discrimination based on race, gender, age, and so on. And people of every race, gender and age can be Capricorns.
The issue came up because an insurance company in Salzburg placed an ad in major newspapers saying, “We are looking for people over 20 for part-time jobs in sales and management with the following star signs: Capricorn, Taurus, Aquarius, Aries and Leo.”
A company spokesman said the astrological limitation was based on hard statistics: “A study indicated that almost all of our best employees across Austria have one of the five star signs. We only decided to continue with that system and hire the best workers.”
The Austrian government investigated, but it concluded that while the company might be discriminating against non-Capricorns, it wasn’t breaking the law.
